I was polishing a friends 57 Chevy. The paint was bad and he was selling it at the end of the week. He asked me to clean it up a little so I went to work on it. 4 hours later (still working on the hood) he comes back and said "that's as far as you got". I said "yeah! I'm having a tough time with this paint. He said the following:
"You can't polish a turd" and "You can't make a virgin out of a whore"

Some others: Can't get it any shinier. You sure love that truck! It's only a truck! And my Father's favorite: You gotta lot of patience! ![]() Last edited by netspec : 12-20-2007 at 10:36 AM. Reason: more content |

My favorite: "Do you ever drive it?"
Yes I'm guilty of driving my garage queen 20 minutes to breakfast then 4 hours of detailing so I can back it back into the garage. I know it's an illness I'm seeking counseling for. |

My fav: After locking the keys in the car in the middle of a detail, neighbor says " You locked you keys in the car eh?" I tell him no, I'm just sticking this coat hanger in the car to hang it up to dry."

Oh this is a great thread... personally, since I do 99% of my clients' cars in my garage, my neighbors are my audience every time... I've heard everything from
"aren't you done yet?" to "how much to do my car?"; '$250-350 depending on condition and what you want done'; "I meant to say car, not cars, sorry"; 'I know, I heard "car" not "cars"; " "but my favorite of all, along with her comments, has to be my mid 50s older Asian lady neighbor who I met while I still owned my 98 BMW 328 and she had a 2000 328, E46... we started off by talking about BMWs, how hers gave her problems, and she saw me always working on mine, mechanically or detailing/washing... over the last couple years, she's become as knowledgeable about detailing as half the people, if not more, on this board (no offense to anyone of course, I'm just a good teacher ) and it's to a point where the other day, while I was working on a 95 911, and as she was throwing out some trash (which is when I usually see her as she's on the opposite side of the alley) she blurted my favorite comment of all time... her: "What year is that?" me: '95' her: "looks nice, what are you using to clean it?" me: 'um menzerna with Meguiar's pads, is that ok *smile*' her: "yea... I guess, just make sure to finish it down with the nano one because those Porsches have some really soft paint" The way that comment made my day and made me laugh is beyond words haha... awesome neighbor to have |

I always get "When you're done do my car next" I say sure no problem. Do you want a basc detail or a full paint correctionoh and these are my prices. They usually laugh and walk off. I've had at least two car owners tell me if I would charge them less if they help me. I say no I'll charge more since I have to show you how to do it properly. Then we just both laugh.

Nobody says anything to me . When the woman across the street was waxing her car , I was going to give some advise, she said she didnt need any advise , her father showed her how to wax a car. She put her Turtle wax on so heavy I thought she would never get it off. She has a dark blue car with white wax in every nook and crany. My friends expect my car to be clean all the time , and if its dirty they will tell me . If its clean and shiny they expect it to be that way.
